ART204 - Ceramics I

In this class, students explore contemporary skills being used in ceramics today. Students will develop skills in hand-building and wheel throwing. Students will gain an understanding of glaze techniques, tools, ceramic vocabulary, safety, and historical appreciation.

ART304 - Ceramics II
Prerequisites: Ceramics I

This is an intermediate course in the exploration and development of ceramics as art. Students will continue building on prior skills in hand building, throwing, or a combination of both. Demonstrations and projects are geared to push students to the next level of their personal development. There is an emphasis on glaze theory, different firing process, and the development of a personal artistic style. Students will begin to focus on and research particular areas of contemporary and historical ceramics.
ART305 - Pre-AP Art Studio

This class is based on the AP Art Studio class. The Pre-AP course is offered only to Juniors planning to take the Senior AP class. Juniors are expected to complete all of the requirements of the Senior AP portfolio but are given more direction throughout the process. Each student will choose a Drawing, 2-D, or 3-D Portfolio to complete. Students will spend a significant amount of studio time producing a body of artwork that demonstrates a high level of quality and growth. Students will need to understand what makes the materials in front of them into good works of art. They will need to understand how to take the ideas they come up with and turn them into a composition using what they know about the elements and principles of art and design. Each portfolio is comprised of three distinct components: Quality, Concentration, and Breadth. The Quality section will represent five of their very best works that will be matted and ready for their final exam in May. The Concentration section will represent a body of work that has investigated an idea or concept through the students� own artistic vision. The third section is Breadth which will encompass a wide range of the students� abilities in art. All three portfolios will teach students how to expand their ability to communicate on paper and execute an idea to completion. Note: Students who take the AP Art Studio course are NOT required to take the AP Exam. Cost for taking the AP Exam is approximately $78.
ART306 - Digital Photography

In this class, you will learn everything you need to know in order to make a fine digital image and print. The class goes through the fundamental technical skills and progresses to the image-making concepts that create a skilled photographer. The class is appropriate for both the true beginner and those with some experience. (Text: Focus on Photography, Davis Publ.). (Note: Each student will be required to have their own digital camera, 3 mega pixels or higher. There are a limited number of cameras that may be rented from the school for the semester.)
ART401 - Sculpture I

This course explores traditional and contemporary sculpture materials and processes. Emphasis is on both additive, subtractive, casting, and assemblage methods of working. Goals include acquiring technical skills, understanding the physical and expressive possibilities of diverse materials, and learning safe, appropriate use of tools and materials.
ART402 - Digital Graphics

This course prepares students to design and execute layouts, illustrations, advertisements, brochures, and publication materials using digital electronic media. This introductory course addresses both the fundamentals as well as the advanced aspects of graphic communications. Students will learn to use Adobe Creative Suite.
ART405 - AP Art Studio
Prerequisites: Teacher Recommendation

Each student will choose a Drawing, 2-D, or 3-D portfolio to complete. With each portfolio, students will spend a significant amount of studio time producing a body of artwork that demonstrates a high level of quality and growth. Students will need to understand what makes the materials in front of them into good works of art. They will need to understand how to take the ideas they come up with and turn them into a composition using what they know about the elements and principles of art and design. Each portfolio is comprised of three distinct components: Quality, Concentration, and Breadth. The Quality section will represent five of their very best works that will be mailed directly with the rest of their portfolio. (For the 3-D portfolio, this will be sent via slides.) The Concentration section will represent a body of work that has investigated an idea or concept through the students� own artistic vision. The third section is Breadth which will encompass a wide range of the students� abilities in art. All of this is outlined in the AP Studio Art poster. Each student will submit their entire portfolio to the Advanced Placement College Board for scoring. College credit may be earned through the AP Studio course depending on the college the student plans to attend and the grade received on the portfolio. This is an intermediate course in sculpture. Students are allowed the freedom to explore a variety of processes (additive, subtractive, and assemblage) or to focus on one area of study. Students develop an understanding of the aesthetics and vocabulary of sculpture by expressing their personal vision.
