This course introduces students to the literary concepts and terms used in the critical analysis of literature. Students study various genres of literature which emphasize figurative language, symbolism, irony and allusion. Students will practice and ?perfect? writing essays, especially literary analysis. A major emphasis during the third quarter will be writing a formal expository research paper using MLA style. Students will also learn the basics of making oral presentations and speeches and will give several speeches to the class. The class will also study vocabulary, grammar and creative writing. This course introduces students to the great writers and works of American literature by surveying literature from the Puritan era to contemporary writing. Analytical essays are written on each major work. The class also will study vocabulary, grammar, creative writing and basic presentation skills. The class analyzes literature within the theme of "The Hero and the Quest." Analytical essays are written on each major work. This course introduces students to a selection of the greatest works of British literature, from Beowulf up to the present time. In preparation for AP English Literature and Composition, the course also includes the close reading and critical analysis of a number of outstanding novels, plays, short stories and poems. Emphasis is placed on analytical thinking and writing: the students write essays on the rhetorical techniques and themes of the works studied. Individualized help with grammar (including re-writes where necessary) is provided, as is a strong vocabulary program and some opportunities for creative writing. Students will write about the works of many great poets, novelists and dramatists, analyzing the powerful effect on themes, plots and characterizations of the authors? beliefs. The course also focuses on the analysis of the literary methods used to effectively communicate the authors? ideas through structure, syntax, diction, allusions and figurative language. Students will write formal, college-level analytical essays on a bi-weekly basis, make oral presentations, study vocabulary and master grammatical skills. Note: Students who take the AP English course are required to take the AP Exam. Cost for taking the AP Exam is approximately $86.
