The focus of this course is to build on the elementary foundation of vocabulary and grammar. The goal of the course is to learn principles of writing and to use an expanding vocabulary and understanding of grammar to improve students' written communication. Students will study narrative, descriptive, persuasive, expository and creative writing. ENG061 - Literature 6

This course seeks to increase comprehension and theme analysis of literature. Students study the elements of a story (e.g. setting, characters, point of view, plot and theme) through the in class and independent reading of short stories and novels. Students will write three five-paragraph book reports to develop essay writing skills. (Texts: Spotlight on Literature:Bronze Level, The Magician's Nephew, Old Yeller, The Cay, Tuck Everlasting, Gladys Aylward: The Little Woman)

Students will study vocabulary and grammar within the context of becoming competent writers. Students will use narrative, descriptive, persuasive, expository and creative writing to develop effective written communication skills. The course will conclude with a step-by-step explanation of the writing process for a three-page research paper using MLA style and format. This course continues to increase students' comprehension and theme analysis of literature. Students study the elements of a story (e.g. setting, character, point of view, plot and theme) through the in-class and independent reading of short stories and novels. ENG080 - English 8

This course includes the study of grammar, vocabulary, literature and writing. Students will continue in their grammar study by learning about phrases, clauses and comma usage with the goal of improving writing. Our literature study will include short story selections, a novel from the fantasy literature genre, and a biography from the World War II era. Students will also be introduced to Shakespeare's shortest play, AThe Comedy of Errors. Students will write a research paper in MLA format about an event or person from World War II.
