Is the school accredited? Yes, Harrisburg Christian School is fully accredited in grades K-12 by the
Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and Middle States Association of Colleges and
Schools.
Are the teachers certified? Yes, all full time teachers are required to be certified by ACSI. Most
teachers hold certification in the state where they did their undergraduate studies. At present,
approximately 50% of our instructors hold Master's degrees.
Is there bus transportation available? Yes, busing is generally provided by the school district in which
you reside, and there is no charge for this service. Students coming from Central Dauphin, Derry Township
(Hershey), Susquehanna, Hershey, Lower Dauphin, Middletown, East Pennsboro, Harrisburg, Mechanicsburg,
Cumberland Valley, Susquenita (Marysville), Northern Lebanon and Steelton/Highspire area school districts
are currently among those providing bus services to HCS.
What sports are offered? For Middle and High School boys: Baseball, basketball, track, soccer, golf, and
tennis are available. Wrestling is available as a club-level sport and includes boys from elementary grades
through high school. For Middle and High School girls: Field Hockey, basketball, track, soccer, golf and
tennis are offered. HCS is a member of the Commonwealth Christian Athletic Conference (CCAC), and our teams
compete in a variety of outings in both the conference and non-conference categories. For elementary
students, we also offer seasonal skill-building camps (such as soccer and basketball).
What type of textbooks and curriculum is used in the classroom? Both
Christian and general/instructional textbooks are used. All curriculum is approved by our Educational
Policies Committee prior to classroom use, as directed by the School Board. It should be noted that Bible
is a major daily subject within our K-12 curriculum.
What is the average class size? Maximum class sizes: 20 students in
kindergarten (one teacher and one aide); 20 students in first and second grades; 22 students in each third,
fourth and fifth grade. In Middle and High School, homerooms average 20 students.
What is the dress code? HCS uniforms come from the Flynn & O'Hara
uniform company. Girls have options of jumpers (elementary), skirts or dress pants and collared cotton or
polo shirts, vests and cardigans. Boys have option of khaki or navy uniform dress pants, collared cotton
or polo shirts, vests and cardigans. Uniform shorts may be worn by elementary students (grades K-5) during
the months of August, September and May. Uniforms may be ordered direct from the supplier at
www.flynnohara.com. Sneakers are acceptable
footwear. Dress code exceptions are made for various field trips and community projects, and are
announced in advance by the Headmaster. Please refer to the Student Handbook section for additional
information about the Dress Code.
Does the school permit parental involvement? In fact, we encourage
parental involvement in many ways. Parents are welcome at the school: inolvement in our Parent
Association and/or a committee, chaperoning field trips, helpig in the cafeteria, being a room parent,
helping at semi-annual workdays, helping in the office, or by taking home projects such as folding,
labeling, and stuffing envelopes.
